Heatstroke

Animals do not perspire the way humans do; the only sweat glands that they have are on the pads of their feet. Animals pant to cool themselves and use a temperature regulator called convection to cool their skin. Both panting and convection cool the body by exchanging the warm body temperature for the cooler air outside. If the air surrounding the pet is not considerably cooler than the animals’ body, then the cooling system will not work and heatstroke can then occur.

Signs of Heatstroke
• Increased heart rate
• Excessive panting
• Increased salivation
• Weakness or confusion
• Bright red tongue
• Red or pale gums
• Thick, sticky saliva
• Depression
• Dizziness
• Vomiting (sometimes with blood)
• Diarrhea

If you notice these signs get to your vet immediately. In the mean time, apply cool wet towels to inner thighs, stomach and foot pads. Use cool water, not cold. Cold water will cause the blood vessels to constrict, slowing down the cooling process. Never submerge your pet in water; that could cause more complications down the road. Offer the pet small amounts of water, don’t force them to drink as that could trigger choking.
